Postpartum depression risks were found to be lower among women who incorporated fish oil, which is high in omega-3 fatty acids, into their diet during pregnancy. Researchers from the University of Connecticut School of Nursing analyzed data from over 50 pregnant women. Between week 24 and week 40 of their pregnancy, the women who took a fish oil capsule once a week had few symptoms of postpartum depression than the women who took a placebo.
"DHA consumption during pregnancy at levels that are reasonably attained from foods has the potential to decrease symptoms of postpartum depression," the authors wrote in a press release.
Dr. Michelle Price Judge, who worked on the study, says that though their findings show a positive correlation between fish oil intake and a decrease in postpartum depression, the data they collected is not enough to make any definitive assessments.
